Stage 1, 2, 3 and 4 Upgrades for Harley-Davidson & Indian

Air cleaner and exhaust, then cams, then displacement, then heads. One rung at a time, each one tuned on the dyno.

Stage 1 is a high-flow air cleaner, a full exhaust system or slip-ons, and a dyno tune. It is the biggest change a stock bike feels for the money, and it is where the heat problem gets solved. Stage 2 adds a camshaft chosen for the displacement and the way you ride: a torque grind for a bagger that tours two-up, a bigger cam for a Softail that gets ridden hard. Lifters, pushrods and the cam plate or chain tensioners are replaced where the platform calls for it.

Stage 3 is displacement. Big bore kits take a Milwaukee-Eight 107 to a 114 or 117, a 114 to a 124 or 128, a Twin Cam 103 to a 107 or 110, with bored or sleeved cylinders, new pistons and rings. Stage 4 adds ported heads, higher compression and a matched throttle body and injectors for bikes that are built to be ridden that way.

Every stage ends on the dyno. A cam or a big bore without a calibration built for it is a hotter, angrier bike, not a faster one. We quote the parts and the labor together and tell you honestly which rung is worth it.

Questions

Stage 1 to Stage 4 Upgrades FAQ

Which stage should I start with?

Stage 1 with a tune, almost always. It fixes the heat, wakes the bike up and tells us how the engine responds before anyone spends money on cams or cylinders.

Do I need a new clutch or compensator with a big bore?

Often the compensator and clutch spring are checked or upgraded with Stage 3 and 4 torque. We inspect them during the build and quote any upgrade before doing it.

Do you install cams on Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam engines?

Yes. Cam installs, cam plate and tensioner work, lifters and pushrods are routine here, and the dyno session is part of the job.
